My son is learning photography the old-school way: manual-exposure SLR, black and white film developed by hand.

@gbe: Yay! Give it new door seals and mirror-cushion foam every 25 years or so, and it will still be ticking for your grandchildren. :)

Sometimes it's more fun to use old cameras. And instructive. Perhaps he is a future great photographers who can become famous for his pictures. Come then remember who laid the foundation ....

@Kent: Thanks. Later on if he continues in photography I trust he'll understand exposure and the other fundamentals better than if I'd just handed him something modern to learn with.

nice shot - I love his expression.

it is possible to learn the fundamentals of photography using a digital SLR, and it's certainly cheaper than film, but one has to resist the urge to fix mediocre shots via post-processing. when experimenting and playing around with exposure (especially exposure comp) I like the instant feedback.

the best way to learn and to avoid plenty of bad shots, It's an excellent camera in an other way, everything to become a good photographer
